Glock 19 Ghost - Review: The Gray Ghost Precision Glock 19 Slide and Barrel upgrades our G19 with a GGP billet slide and threaded match barrel, plus a trigger, sights, and other Brownells parts.

If you've spent any time scrolling through gun photos on Instagram or other social media platforms, you know that

The rage these days. It seems like the mother of all Glock upgrades with fancy parts until there's almost nothing left of the original gun, and that's not even including the 80% of builds that provide a blank canvas for customization. While these projects may get a stream of likes on social media, we sometimes wonder how many of them are just safe queens or temperamental toys.

As prepared individuals, we enjoy being at the range as much as any other red-blooded American, but we also want our guns to remain practical and reliable for real-world defensive use. Form over function isn't really our thing. We want to know that we can keep that gun next to us in case of an emergency and it will fail every time we pull the trigger. Anything else would just be a fun novelty to attract people with less disposable income.

So what upgrades can we add to a plain Jane Glock 19 that improve functionality without compromising reliability? If we ever wanted to go back to the original configuration, we started by looking at the slide and cylinder, as these parts can easily be replaced with stock. They feature more serrations to grip the slide, higher tolerances for better accuracy, and the option to add an RMR or other micro red dot optic, as well as a suppressor or compensator. And, of course, they also make a nice change to cosmetics.

You may remember our recent review of the Gray Ghost Gear Gypsy Backpack. The guys at Gray Ghost continue to expand into the firearms market with their Gray Ghost Precision brand of parts and full line of pistols and rifles. Related to our aforementioned search for G19 upgrades, GGP offers slides and barrels for several Glock models. Tear-off slides are available on the G17 Gen 3, Gen 4, G19 Gen 3, Gen 4 and G43.

Gray Ghost Precision G19 slides are machined from American-made 17-4 stainless steel billets and feature tighter tolerances than OE Glock slides. Each slide is coated with a durable black nitride coating. Each features an RMR red dot, GGP logo, G10 closure plate and mounting screws.

Two patterns are offered for these slides, the V1 consists of bevelled serrations with lightning cuts on the front, while the V2 has a hexagonal "geoscale" texture. As we mentioned earlier, there are Gen 3 and Gen 4 versions of the weapons.

As for the barrels, they are currently the G17 and G19. They are made of 416R stainless steel with a tolerance of +/- 0.003 inch and match chambered to Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) specifications. Barrels have a 1:10 twist rate and can be uncoated or with a black nitride finish. For those looking to run a can or combo, GGP offers an optional 1/2 x 28 thread with included thread guard.

We decided to test the V1 slide (MSRP $450) in our Glock 19 Gen 4. It came in a neatly packed foam case with a pre-installed closing plate and two long screws to allow the RMR optic to be used. Assembly/Installation Guide. The manual also includes a QR code to a slide assembly tutorial video:

Since the Gray Ghost precision slide was removed, we needed to complete the parts to use it. Following the guide, you will need the following items:

Grey Ghost Precision Ggp Glock 17/19 And Sig Sauer P320 And P365 Drop In 9mm Pistol Parts: Slides, Barrels And Triggers! (video!)

We went to Brownells.com to pick up these items. The All-in-One Glock 19 Slide Completion Kit ($80 MSRP) was out of stock at the time, so we added the individual components we needed to the cart:

We reused the original recoil spring assembly from the G19 instead of buying a replacement because it was so easy to replace. We also opted for a set of Trijicon HD night sights (MSRP $141) with a combination of tritium and bright orange paint for visibility in all lighting conditions. It's important to note that you need to be careful when selecting sights for any aftermarket slide, as larger areas like the TruGlo TFO may not fit the RMR cut. But the Trijicon kit worked great.

Finally, we knew that a heavy duty trigger would be inappropriate for this build, but the pistol we were going to carry didn't need a super light trigger. So we opted for the Apex Action Enhancement Kit ($123 MSRP) to reduce the trigger pull by about 1 pound, eliminate extra travel and make reset easier. This drop-in kit includes a trigger, coupler and safety plunger.

Using the process shown in the Gray Ghost Precision video, we assembled the internal slides at home using a punch set and installed the Apex trigger. Local shop that finished our slide and clicked Trijicon sights with ease.

The last piece of the puzzle was the barrel, and we went for one with a black nitride finish and threads ($190 MSRP). It has machined GGP lettering, 9mm markings and covers to match those on the slide. The thread guard ring has a machined texture that gives it a cool visual touch and provides plenty of grip for quick removal.

After installing the barrel and oiling the gun, we can finally load up and go to the range.

To test the reliability of our newly updated G19, we went through several standard Federal 115gr FMJ ammo boxes. In about 20 rounds, we failed to feed the nose up:

However, after over 100 rounds, we have not been able to replicate this jam. We then ran through 20 Federal HST 147g hollowpoints, which the Glock performed smoothly. Other than the isolated crash shown above, there is nothing out of the ordinary to report.

Opticsplanet Exclusive Grey Ghost Precision Ggp Glock 19 Gen 3 Slide With Rmr Cut Version 1

While we haven't done scientific testing, we've seen a slight improvement in groups due to a combination of tighter match tube tolerances and an improved tip trigger combination. The hi-vis trigecon sights were also useful for follow-up shots.

Overall, we felt great with the updated G19. An isolated feeding disorder was a concern at first, but its early onset and inability to repeat it later lead us to believe it may be a hacking problem. We will continue to run the gun at the range with various ammo to increase confidence in this conclusion, but so far we are pleased with its reliability. The congestion pattern is a concern; Not alone in the new parts.

Aggressive serrations make the slide stop at the top, and its flashy cuts add visual appeal without veering into space weapon territory. There is also an option to add RMR, which we plan to do in the future. So far we are very happy with the Trijicon HD.

The GGP Match barrel offers a slight improvement in accuracy due to tighter tolerances, but the big selling point for us is its threads. It has the means to add a suppressor or compensator - we don't need to explain the many advantages of a suppressor, but if you're wondering what the advantages of handgun kits are, check out this article by RECOIL's Dave Merrill.

Grey Ghost Precision Complete Slide W/ Rmr Cut For Glock 19 Gen 1 4

As for the Apex Action Enhancement Kit, we think it's a great incremental upgrade for your portable weapon. It retains most of the weight of the trigger pull, smoothing the action and adding a sharper reset. We've shot enough Glocks with 2-pound triggers to know that

While we wouldn't go full Gucci status without the luxury frame, smooth magazine baseplates, and custom Cerakote work, we're very happy with our upgraded G19. The total MSRP for the upgrade was $1,011 including the gun, and many of you might want to spend that kind of money on another pistol, an understandable choice. But if you want to make your existing Glock look even better without ruining its reliability, it's worth adding some carefully selected parts. All Instagram likes are just a nice bonus.
